]]> A striking white glass sculpture! A rectangular cast glass box appearing to be wrapped and contained by ribbed fabric – which is what it was cast from!
A geometric shape softened by the folds and twists of the material. The black grid creates a dominant contrast and repels access to the interior. It obscures the clear glass and the layer of silver beneath. This is cast in dense white glass.
First I made a model of the whole piece and cast it in plaster ready for firing. And then I fused the grid which is made from handmade black glass stringers and fired this in my mould with clear glass. After I put in a sheet of very thin silver followed by the white glass for the main body of the piece and refired it.

As with all my pieces, the mould is broken away. Followed by cold working (my least favourite part!)

I’ve been working on this series for several years and find it fascinating! A form encloses an inner space and is the boundary to the outside. Where there is an opening, this links the two. The viewer is drawn into my dense glass boxes by the allure of gold or silver. The interplay between the interior and the exterior articulates a dialogue at the threshold.
A wonderful addition to a collection of glass sculpture!

]]> An intriguing glass sculpture in lapis blue glass and 23.5ct gold. It’s a slim rectangular glass box appearing to be made from a deeply textured blue fabric which has been ‘pushed back’ to reveal a gold interior.
The humps and hollows suggest something soft. There is gold at the opening and it’s seeping through the seam suggesting a golden interior. There is an interplay between the inside and the outside, a dialogue at the threshold.
This is an open cast glass sculpture fired with 23.5ct gold. Made first from a fabric and card model which is cast into plaster. The model is discarded and replaced with glass and gold and fired for 4 days in the kiln to 840 centigrade.
As with all my pieces, the mould is broken away. Followed by cold working (my least favourite part!)

This is cast from dense black glass and 23.5ct gold. The model is made from cardboard and fabric and cast in plaster. Then the model is discarded, the gold put in place in the empty mould and a crucible of glass put on top to fire over 4 days. Once cool I break away the mould and cold work.

The interior, a golden box, is protruding outwards. The cushion is made from a ribbed fabric, the hollows and bumps suggest more than what is on the surface and the seams are on the outside, creating a fluidity between the inside and the outside – a dialogue at the threshold.

This is made of opaque aquamarine glass. I made a model of the cushion and its box first, then cast it in plaster. Then carefully positioned the 23.5ct gold and hoped it would stay in place! Then placed my measured glass in a crucible above my mould and fired it over 4 days. Once cool I broke away the mould and did some cold working.

]]> This black glass sculpture of a textured cast glass black box is viewed from above into an architectural space. The allure of gold draws you in but a golden grid prevents access to the deeper interior of the inner space. The grid is replicated on the sides of the austere exterior.

The highly polished top edge is the meeting point of the exterior and the interior, a threshold between the two.

This is cast in dense black glass.

The base was open cast first with 23.5ct gold. Textured wax walls were built onto the base and the resulting form was cast in plaster. Then the wax was steamed out (lost wax casting).

It was fired again with a crucible of glass to create the whole piece. The mould was broken away, then the rim was polished on 6 grits and a cork belt to give this handmade glass a high shine.
